The Topic Lessons section is there to help you understand the questions, not to memorise them. Next to every question you find why the right answer is right, why the other options are wrong and a short lesson on the topic. So you can find the answer even when the exam asks a different question on the same topic.

Explanations are shown in your interface language. Dutch questions, answers and patterns stay in Dutch in every language.

Four sections

Section	How you study
KNS (Knowledge of Dutch Society)	Questions are grouped by topic (health, education, work, history…). Each topic has a short lesson. You choose your answer first, then read the explanation.
Lezen (reading)	You answer the questions about a text and check them. The sentence each answer is based on is marked in the text, and you can see the meaning of difficult words inside the text.
Sentence completion	For each sentence: 4–6 example endings, the pattern used and common mistakes.
Question and answer	For each question: 4–6 example answers, the pattern of the answer and useful words.

The reading Strategy lessons have no questions of their own: you try what you learned on the questions of the texts. The Go to the texts button under the lesson takes you to the reading texts.

In the speaking sections a short answer is enough: one word or a few words also count. You can listen to the example answers and repeat the pronunciation.

Study style

At the top of the page you choose how you want to study. Your choice is saved to your account (if you are not signed in, it stays in this browser).

Try first: you choose your answer first, then the explanation opens. If you are stuck, choose Show the answer and explanation; then the question does not count as answered right. Test yourself closes the question again.
Learn now: the answer and explanation are open from the start, and you read the topic like a lesson.

In the speaking sections the examples start closed in Try first and open in Learn now.

Progress

Answered right and Learned are two different things. In KNS and reading your answer is checked and shows as "Answered right" or "Review".
When you understand a question, you press the I learned this button under the explanation yourself. You can take the mark back at any time.
Topic progress (e.g. "Health 5/7") counts what you have learned. Questions you answered right but have not marked yet are shown separately.
Next question takes you to a question in the same topic that you have not learned yet.
When you answer every question of a KNS topic or a reading text right and mark them all as learned, you earn XP once. The speaking sections give no XP.
On My dashboard you see your progress per section and continue where you left off.

Your own answer

In question and answer and in sentence completion you can add your own answer above the example answers. You can edit or delete it later, and listen to it with the listen button. In sentence completion, writing only the end of the sentence is enough.

Only you can see your own answer; it is not shown to other members. You can write up to 200 characters.

After you finish a practice exam, the result page of question and answer and sentence completion questions shows The answer you wrote while studying next to your exam answer. Only you see this too; it is never shown during the exam. With Open in Topic Lessons you can edit your answer. If you have no own answer for that question yet, you see the link Add your own answer to this question.

In All Questions you also see the same answer when you press Show answer on question and answer and sentence completion questions; if you have none yet, you can add it there with Add your own answer. It is the same answer in both places: change it in one and it changes in the other.

For who can see it, see Who can see my own answer?

From a practice exam to the explanation

On the result page of a practice exam and in the question bank, questions that have an explanation link to the topic lesson. You can go straight from a question you got wrong to its explanation.

Who can use it?

The topic lessons, the first few questions of each topic and the explanations of some of them are open to everyone. The other questions of a topic are for members; without a membership you only see how many there are. All questions and explanations of a section and saving your progress require a membership that includes that section (the full exam package or a package for that section). If your membership ends, the questions you answered or marked before stay visible to you.

The explanations were prepared carefully and are being reviewed. Rules and figures can change over time; for official information, inburgeren.nl and rijksoverheid.nl apply.
