The bell and live notifications

The bell icon in the top menu shows how many unread notifications you have; click it to see your notifications. When a new notification arrives while the site is open, a short live notification also appears on screen. Your notifications arrive without reloading the page; if your connection is weak, the site checks by itself every few seconds.

Notifications are shown in your current language: if you change the language, your older notifications also appear in the new language.

Notification preferences

On the Settings → Notifications page you can turn these on or off:

Challenges: when someone challenges you, when your challenge is accepted or declined, when it has a result or when it is about to expire.
Challenge emails: the email you get when you have no push notifications turned on and have not seen a challenge on the site.
When I am passed in the ranking: when someone you follow passes you in the weekly XP ranking (at most once a day).
When someone mentions me: when your @username is written in a comment or a profile answer.
Level test: the level test invitation after your free trial ends and at most one reminder (bell and push notification).
Level test emails: the same invitation by email. You can also turn these off with the link in the email, without signing in. See How does the level test work?

Notifications about your account (such as membership, exam evaluation and answers to your questions) always arrive.

Notifications when the site is closed

To hear about a challenge even when you are not on the site, you can turn on push notifications. After you sign in, a short card appears in the bottom corner of the page, and also when you send or receive a challenge; when you tap Turn on notifications, your browser asks for permission. You can turn them on or off later under Settings → Notifications → Push notifications on this device. Each phone or computer is switched on separately.

Tapping a notification opens that challenge directly.
Live game invitations are valid for only 60 seconds; a notification that arrives late is not shown at all. If you still tap one too late, the page tells you the invitation has run out and you can challenge your opponent yourself.
iPhone and iPad: Apple only allows push notifications in an app that has been added to the home screen. First add the site with Share → Add to Home Screen, then open the app from your home screen and turn notifications on.
Android (especially Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO): If notifications only land in the notification shade, open your phone's Settings → Apps → Chrome → Notifications → dutchdaily.online, turn on Floating notifications and set Lock screen to Show. On some phones you may also need to turn on Autostart for Chrome and set battery saver to No restrictions.
When you sign out, when you have not signed in on that device for 30 days, or when someone signs in with another account on the same device, that device is removed from your notification list; your other devices are not affected. You can turn notifications on again whenever you like.
While the site is open in front of you, a notification only appears as a short notice on the site. Safari on iPhone, iPad and Mac also shows every notification as a system notification.

If you have no push notifications, you get one email about a new challenge about 10 minutes later if you have not seen it on the site; at most one per challenge and five a day. You can turn it off with the link in the email, without signing in, or with Challenge emails under Settings → Notifications.

Emails

You can unsubscribe from announcement and campaign emails with the link at the bottom of those emails, without signing in. Emails about your account (verification, password reset, membership) continue to be sent.

@mentions

In blog comments, word game comments and your answers to profile questions, you can mention someone by typing @ and choosing a username; that person gets a notification. You cannot mention members with whom there is a block, members whose profile is private and whom you don't follow, or members whose account is not active; in that case the text stays plain text.

There are limits to prevent a flood of notifications: the same person gets at most one mention notification per 10 minutes, and you can send at most 10 mention notifications per minute and at most 50 per day.
