Some sentences ask for a place: where is someone going, where do they work, where do they put something? The sentence often ends with a preposition or with a verb like gaat, werkt, legt.

The most common prepositions:

naar = to (movement): naar school, naar de winkel
in = in, inside: in het ziekenhuis, in Amsterdam
bij = at, with (a person or place): bij de bakker, bij mijn moeder
op = on: op tafel, op de markt

Examples:

Alex gaat naar de winkel.
Aaron werkt in het ziekenhuis.
Ik leg mijn ring op het kastje.
Chen verkoopt bloemen op de markt.
Daniël gaat naar de tandarts.

If the sentence already has the preposition (Hij gaat naar…), just say the place: de stad. If not, say it with the preposition: in een kantoor.

Places usually have de or het: de supermarkt, het station. But naar huis, naar school, op tafel have no article.

Exam tip: in Spreken a place is enough: Naar school. or just School. Even with the wrong preposition you are understood; what matters is naming a place.
