Preparing for an exam on your own is mostly a quiet business: word lists, practice exams, recordings where you listen to your own voice. Yet there are hundreds of people preparing for the same exam, with the same uncertainty and often the same story. The Dutch Daily Online community exists for exactly that: asking a question, sharing a practice exam result and saying "I'm here too", finding someone who is sitting the exam the same week. In this article we explain how to use the community as a study tool, the privacy settings and the etiquette; at the end we show what a week with the community looks like.

Why is the community more effective than studying alone?

The two biggest enemies when learning a language are uncertainty and loss of motivation. Uncertainty is questions like "is this answer good enough?" or "do sign questions really come up in the exam?"; loss of motivation is giving up on vocabulary in week three. The cure for both is the same: people on the same road as you.

Anyone can read the community page; to post, comment and react, a logged-in account with a verified email is all you need. If you do not have an account yet, sign up; with your Google account you are in within seconds.

Tip: Starting out as a "reader" in the community is completely normal. For the first few days, just browse the feed and see which questions get asked and which answers get picked as the best answer. Then write your first post.

Asking questions: the right category, a clear title

When you share a post in the feed you choose a category: Question, Experience, Tip, My study space, My exam result, Life in the Netherlands, Resource tip, Chat or Other. For studying, the most valuable one is Question, because only in this category can the author mark a comment as the best answer, and that answer is shown at the top. So once a question has been answered well, everyone who searches for the same question later goes straight to the answer.

A good question has three features:

Feature	Weak example	Good example
A concrete situation	"Spreken is so hard, what do I do?"	"Is Voor mijn partner enough as an answer to Waarom wil je naar Nederland?"
Your own attempt	"What does this word mean?"	"I noted afspraak as 'appointment', but I can't work out how to use the verb afspreken."
Tags and category	No tags, in the "Other" category	In the Question category, with the tags `spreken` and `a1`

You can add up to 5 tags and 4 images to a post. If a question comes from a screen you do not understand, adding a screenshot speeds up the answer a lot; photos are shrunk in your browser and uploaded with details such as location removed. By typing @username in the text you can mention a member who helped you before, or a teacher; teacher and team answers stand out with a role badge.

Before posting your question, type a few words into the search box at the top of the feed: most KNS and Spreken questions have been asked and answered before. Discussions about the topics in the KNS guide or the Spreken sample answers usually gather under those tags.

Your results on Dutch Daily Online do not have to stay silent numbers that only you see. A practice exam you completed, a challenge you finished, the 100 / 250 / 500 word milestone you reached in My Words, your 7 / 30 / 100 day study streak and the badges you earned turn into an Achievement post with the Share in the community button. You edit the ready-made text in the preview and share it; each result can be shared only once.

This has two benefits for your studying:

Commitment: Saying "I shared my 30-day streak" makes it harder to skip day 31.
Scale, not comparison: Seeing how many points others score in a KNS practice exam helps you set a realistic goal for yourself. People following the 30-day study plan usually share their results weekly.

You can give posts you like a Like, and posts you really want to stand out a Hype. Your Hypes are limited per day and cannot be taken back; so a Hype is the short way of saying "this post is useful for everyone". Posts that get Hypes appear in the Popular tab and in the Post of the week spot.

Following topics and people

The feed has four tabs: New, Popular, Following and Saved. For studying, the most useful is Following, because you build it yourself:

Following tags: When you click a tag and press Follow, every post with that tag lands in this tab. Follow the tag of whichever exam part you are focusing on: kns, lezen, spreken, words.
Following members: You press Follow on a member's profile. If their profile is public, the follow starts right away; if the member has restricted their profile, a follow request is sent, and once they accept, their posts show up in your tab.
Save: If you have no time to read now, save the post; the Saved tab is your personal "study later" list.

With member search you can find people preparing for the same exam. You type a name or username into the search box; the results show only the display name, username and profile photo. A practical route: find a post in the My exam result or Experience category that mentions your embassy, follow its author and get to know them in the comments. Members whose exam date is public on their profile make it easier to find people sitting the exam the same week.

Tip: A small group of 2–3 people sitting the exam around the same date is more effective than a big crowd. Ask each other one Spreken question a day and assess the answers with short comments.

Polls are a good learning tool too. With Add a poll you can attach a poll with 2–6 options that runs for 1 / 3 / 7 days: a poll such as "Which part are you struggling with?" tells a beginner "everyone is afraid of Spreken, you're not alone".

Profile privacy: you choose what you show, and to whom

Being visible in the community does not mean opening up everything. Under Settings → Public profile you decide:

Setting	Options	What it does
Profile visibility	Everyone · Only logged-in members · Only me	Decides who can open your profile page; on a restricted profile, following starts with a request
Your name	Full name · Shortened last name ("Sarah Y.")	The name shown on your posts, comments and in lists
Profile sections	Statistics, achievements, games, words, exam date, follows, profile questions	You switch each section on or off separately
Blocking	Per member	A blocked member cannot comment on your posts, give you a Hype or send you notifications

There are post-level options too:

Post anonymously: If you tick this while writing a post, your name and photo are not shown to members; it says "Anonymous member", and the comments you write under it are anonymous as well. Use this option if you do not feel comfortable sharing an exam result or a personal experience under your name. The choice cannot be changed later, and the team can see the anonymous author in order to protect the community.
Show only on my profile: If you tick this while editing a post you shared, the post leaves the feed and stays only on your profile.

You set your notifications as well: Settings → Notifications → the Community option switches notifications for likes, Hypes, comments and best answers on or off. If you do not want to be distracted while studying, switch it off and check once in the evening.

Etiquette: how to be a good community member

The rules are short, but a good community needs more than rules:

Be respectful. No insults, no harassment. Correct a wrong answer with "that's not right, because…"; criticize the answer, not the person.
Do not share personal details. Phone numbers, addresses, document and file numbers do not belong in a post. Your exam date and the name of the embassy are enough.
Selling exam questions and answers, or offering to cheat, is forbidden. Such posts are hidden and the account is restricted.
No advertising, no spam. A post can contain at most 3 links.
Say where your answer comes from. If you are passing on an exam rule, say "naarnederland.nl says this"; if it is something you remember, do not be shy about saying "I think".
Mark the best answer. If your problem is solved, pick the most helpful comment; it is a signpost for the next person searching for the same question.
Report, don't argue. If you see content that breaks the rules, press the Report button; the team will look at it.

Tip: Helping someone is the best way to learn a topic. To explain a KNS question you have to go back to your own notes; from then on, that topic is yours.

What does a week with the community look like?

The plan below fits the community into a daily study session of 45–60 minutes with 10 minutes. The community does not replace your main study; it carries it.

Day	Main study (35–50 min)	Community (10 min)
Monday	One KNS topic from Topic Lessons + 10 words	Write your weekly goal in a short Chat post ("This week: 2 KNS topics, 3 Spreken")
Tuesday	Spreken practice exam, record 5 answers	Ask about an answer you are unsure of as a Question, with the `spreken` tag
Wednesday	Lezen practice exam + the explanations of your mistakes	Browse the Following tab, write an answer to one question
Thursday	Word games, review the week's words	Send a friend a challenge, share the result
Friday	KNS practice exam (30 min)	Share your result as a My exam result or Achievement post
Saturday	Collect the week's mistakes, review them	Come back to your Monday post with a comment: did you reach the goal?
Sunday	Rest or light review	Read your Saved posts, remove the ones you are done with

The nice thing about this routine is that you close the goal you wrote on Monday in front of the community on Saturday. As the weeks add up, the Posts tab on your profile turns into your own progress diary, and the My activity page shows every comment you wrote and every answer you gave in one place.

Frequently asked questions

My Dutch is very weak, I'm embarrassed to write in the community.

In the community you write in your own language; you do not have to write in Dutch. Dutch sentences come up when Spreken answers are discussed, but the questions and explanations are in your own language. Everyone preparing for the exam started from the same place anyway.

Can my partner or family see my posts?

Posts are shared in a public space. Share anything you do not want seen anonymously, or do not share it at all; by setting your profile to Only me you can close your profile page completely.

What if I get a wrong answer?

Teachers and team members are visible in the community with their badges and correct wrong information. Still, verify every piece of information about exam rules with the official sources; you will find a summary of the rules in the Dutch civic integration exam guide.
