"Do I have to fill in a form to sign up?" No, not anymore. You can join Dutch Daily Online with one tap using your Google account, and log in with the same account every time without a password. In this article you will find out why this route is more practical, what happens on your first visit and with an existing membership, how to link and unlink accounts, and the answers to the questions we hear most often.

With classic registration you type your name, your email and a password, then click the link in the verification email that follows. That method is still there and works perfectly well. But the last thing someone preparing for an exam needs on day one is to invent yet another password and hunt for a verification message in their inbox.

When you continue with Google:

No form: your name and email address come ready from Google.
No verification email: your address already counts as verified by Google, so Dutch Daily Online does not send you a separate verification link.
No new password to remember: at every login you simply pick the Google account that is already open on your phone or in your browser.
Same person, one account: if you registered with your email earlier, no second account is created; you are linked to your existing one.

Tip: If you work from your phone, this route is especially comfortable. On Android your Google account is already signed in on the device; on an iPhone, if you use Gmail or Chrome, you pick your account with one tap. Registration really does take half a minute.

Where is the button?

At the top of the Log in and Sign up pages you will see the "Continue with Google" button. Both pages have the same button, because the system works out by itself whether you are new or an existing member. Clicking it on the "wrong" page is not a problem.

Step by step: if this is your first time

On the Sign up page, tap Continue with Google.
On Google's own screen, choose your account and agree to share your details with Dutch Daily Online.
You return to the site and see a short "Complete your profile" step. Your first name, last name and email address are already filled in.
Here you do just two things: choose your gender and accept the terms of use.
The moment you save, your account is created, you are logged in and you can start preparing for the exam from your dashboard.

That is all. You do not wait for a verification email, because Google has already verified your address. Your account is not created until you finish the profile step, so an attempt you abandon halfway does not leave a "half account" behind; you can start again whenever you like.

Step	Classic sign-up	With Google
Name and email	You type them	Come ready
Password	You invent and remember one	Not needed
Verification email	You wait and click	None
Gender and terms of use	In the form	In the complete-your-profile step
Result	Account open	Account open, logged in

Step by step: if you are already a member

If you registered earlier with email and password and the email address in your Google account is the same, this is what happens when you tap the button:

Your Google identity is linked to your existing account.
No second account is created.
Your practice exam results, word game statistics, badges and community posts: everything stays as it is.
Next time you can either type your password or tap the button; both open the same account.

If the email address in your Google account differs from the one you used for your membership on the site, the system thinks you are a new member and shows the profile step. In that case it is better to log in with your password and link the accounts from your settings instead of completing the profile step; we explain how in the next section.

Tip: If you cannot remember which email you registered with, log in with your password first and try linking from Settings → Linked accounts. That route always links to the right account.

You return to where you were, and your language is kept

A few small details make a difference in daily use.

Coming back: if you were sent to the login page while trying to open a practice exam, after logging in with Google you return to exactly that page; you do not need to open the dashboard and find your way back.
Language: whichever language you use the site in is kept while you go to Google's screen and back. If you started in English, you continue in English.
You stay logged in: logging in with the button works like "remember me", so you do not need to choose again every time on the same device.

Linking and unlinking in your settings

You can manage your accounts yourself at any time. After logging in, go to Settings → Linked accounts. There you see for Google:

whether it is linked or not,
if it is, which email address it was linked with and when,
a Link or Remove button.

To link, you tap the button, confirm your account on Google's screen and the link is in place when you return. For an account with a password, this page asks for your password first; this stops someone else from linking a stranger's identity to your account in a session you left open.

To remove a link your password is asked for as well. There is one safety rule: you cannot remove your only way to log in. If your account has no password and only Google is linked, you have to set a password before removing Google; otherwise you could never get into your account again.

Privacy: what is stored and what is not?

We get this question a lot, so let us be clear. When you log in with Google, Dutch Daily Online stores only:

the ID number Google gives you (to recognise you next time),
your email address,
your name.

What is not stored:

Google's access keys (tokens) are not stored. The site cannot do anything in Google on your behalf; it cannot read your email, reach your contacts or look at your calendar.
No other data from Google is taken.

In short, logging in with Google answers the question "does this person really own this email address", and nothing more. When you want to delete your account completely, the account deletion step in your settings removes everything, linked identities included.

Frequently asked questions

I signed up with Google and I have no password. Is that a problem?

No. An account opened with Google has no password and does not need one; you log in with the button every time. If you still want a password, you can set one under Settings → Security. For security, this page asks you to log in with Google again just before you set the password; this stops someone else from putting a password on your account in a session you left open. Once the password is set, you can log in either with it or with the button.

Can I keep logging in with email and password?

Yes. Classic login stays exactly as it is. Logging in with Google is an extra option, not a requirement. You can use both: your password on the computer, the button on your phone.

If I link Google to the account I opened with a password, will I have two accounts?

No. If the email address is the same, the identity is linked to your existing account: one account, one set of progress. You only end up with two accounts if you use two different email addresses; to avoid that, we recommend linking from your settings.

I don't have a Gmail address. Can I still use Google?

Yes. A Google account is not only for Gmail addresses; if you have a Google account opened with another email address, you can log in with that too. Dutch Daily Online uses the verified address registered in your Google account.

If I delete my account, does it affect my Google account?

No. Deleting your account on Dutch Daily Online only removes your membership on the site and the linked identity records; it does not touch your Google account. For an account without a password, deletion is confirmed by typing your account's email address instead of a password. If you want, you can also remove the site from the "third-party apps" list in your Google account; that is optional.

I got an error on the Google screen. What should I do?

When you come back to the site, you will see a short message on the login page. Trying again is usually enough. If the problem continues, contact us through the help centre; just tell us the email address of your account.
