“I can't go to a course. Can I learn Dutch at home?” The answer: Yes. Today, with the right method and a little discipline, reaching A1 level at home, at your own pace, is entirely possible. For many candidates this route is even more efficient than a course with fixed hours, because you can spend as much time as you want on the topics where you are weak. In this article we explain the road from zero to A1 in 8 steps.

First, make your goal clear

“Learning Dutch” is a very broad goal. For the civic integration exam (inburgering), your goal is much more specific: being able to express yourself at A1 level, read simple texts and know Dutch society. This means:

Being able to describe yourself, your family, your work and your day in simple sentences,
Being able to understand and answer simple questions from daily life,
Being able to find basic information on signs, in advertisements and in short messages.

A clear goal shows you what you need to learn and what you can skip for now. For example, you can set aside complex grammar rules or literary texts for the time being.

Step 1: Learn the sounds and the letters

Dutch uses the Latin alphabet, so you can read it from day one. But some letter combinations are pronounced differently from what you expect: oe is “oo”, ui is a sound English does not have, ij is close to “ay”, and g is a rasping “h” from the throat.

Step 2: Start with the basic words

A language starts with words. Let your first goal be to learn the 500 most important words of everyday life. These are:

Greetings and polite expressions,
Numbers, days, months and clock times,
Family, home, food and shopping,
Health, transport and work.

Step 3: Use spaced repetition

Learning a new word once is not enough; the brain quickly forgets information that is not reviewed. Spaced repetition means reviewing just as you start to forget:

Review	When?
1st review	The day you learn it
2nd review	The next day
3rd review	3 days later
4th review	1 week later
5th review	2 weeks later

With each review, recalling the word gets a little easier, and in the end it becomes permanent.

Practical application: In the word games, save the words you do not know. The games you play with your saved words let you focus on the words you need to review most.

Step 4: Learn words in sentences

A word list on its own is of little use when you speak. Learn every word together with a sentence:

❌ de afspraak = appointment
✅ Ik heb een afspraak bij de huisarts. = I have an appointment with the family doctor.

Words you learn in a sentence are easier to remember, and you learn to use them correctly. You also pick up the grammar without noticing.

Step 5: Keep the basic grammar short

The grammar you need to know for A1 is limited:

Personal pronouns: ik, jij/je, u, hij, zij/ze, wij/we, jullie, zij/ze
Present tense conjugation: ik werk, jij werkt, hij werkt, wij werken
The most important irregular verbs: zijn (to be), hebben (to have), gaan, komen, willen, kunnen
The articles de / het
Word order: verb in second place (V2), verb first in questions
Negation: niet and geen

Step 6: Speak out loud every day

The biggest gap for people who learn at home is speaking practice. Even if you have nobody to talk to, you can do the following:

Talk to yourself: Describe what you are doing in Dutch as you go about your day: Ik maak koffie. Ik ga naar de winkel.
Shadowing: Listen to a sentence and repeat it straight away with the same intonation.
Record yourself: Record your answers to Spreken questions and listen back. In our Spreken practice exams what you say is transcribed, so you can see whether you are understood.
Talk with your partner: If your partner speaks Dutch, set a 10-minute “Dutch hour” every day.

Step 7: Make Dutch part of your life

Instead of using the language only during “study time”, spread it across your daily life:

Switch the language of your phone or an app to Dutch.
Watch simple Dutch videos, children's programs or the news. Prefer content that offers slow, clear Dutch.
Write your grocery list in Dutch.
Listen to Dutch songs and follow the lyrics.

The aim is not to understand every word but to get your ear used to the language.

Step 8: Measure your progress

Someone who does not measure regularly cannot tell how far they have come and may lose motivation. Every two weeks:

Do one practice exam for each part and note your score.
Identify the topics where you made mistakes and plan the next two weeks accordingly.
As the exam approaches, do a full rehearsal with the real exam simulation.

Common mistakes when learning at home

Relying on apps alone: Games and apps are great for vocabulary, but they do not replace speaking and reading practice.
Perfectionism: Being afraid of making mistakes delays speaking. Making mistakes at A1 is normal.
Irregularity: Short study every day instead of one long session a week.
Too many resources: Instead of getting lost among five different books and ten apps, focus on a few good-quality resources.
Neglecting review: Reviewing old material is as important as learning new topics.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to reach A1 at home?

For someone who studies regularly for about an hour a day, 2–4 months is usually enough. Having learned a foreign language before shortens this time.

Does speaking English help?

Absolutely. Dutch belongs to the same language family as English and German. Many words will look familiar: water, hand, huis (house), boek (book).

Can I pass the exam without going to a course at all?

Yes. Many candidates prepare for the exam on their own and succeed. What matters is to study the four skills (vocabulary, reading, speaking and KNS knowledge) in a balanced way and to measure yourself regularly with practice exams.
